Wrapped up my story, "Passage" from the spring workshop and tossed it into the mails to follow up on the nix on "Rescuing Neilson".    Last year the first story I attempted there earned an HM; this time, even thought I considered this story better written and actually more cohesive as a story, nothing but the "did not win but still time to enter again" letter.  So, since my workshop story is at about the same writing level of the earlier HM, off it went!

For a while I've been collaborating with another visionary from the RM past, a poet.  And this update is to mention that over the last month we've sold 6 pieces under our byline.  Coolness!

A couple of months ago I fell under a situation where I lost all the computer based electronics in my home.  This is supposed to be a temporay situation, and that they will eventually be returned.  However, it put a severe crimp on my writing life in that there is only so much I can do in the few minutes I have on breaks here at work.  I hereby tender a real apology to Ellen Datlow and Mike Allen for not posting reviews yet for "The Coyote Road" and "Clockwork Phoenix 2".  One I'm nearly finished with, but the other is electronic and not something I can take work time to read.  If only I had the fundage for one of those little netbooks.  Even that is beyond me in this horrid time.

Now, about this here Dreamwidth.  No current way to reverse crosspost from LJ yet, is there?

"Rescuing Neilson" is out at HRB, subbed to the Destination: Future antho.  Here's hoping!  I really love having work published with HRB - they may not yet be considered as a pro market, but having a story in one of their anthologies sure gives me a professionally published feeling.

Oh, and if you have a moment pop on over to Jim Hines' LJ or Dreamwidth - he has a book giveaway going on for a signed copy of his "The Stepsister Scheme".  All you have to do is go over to his website and find a certain little fire spider lurking somewhere in the pages...

...received a "did not win" letter, with added "send another story quick for next quarter" inked on it.  Well, it's already out again, after a small touch-up on a couple overly wordy spots.

Here's a very helpful note regarding the synopsis, thanks to JPSorrow (Joshua Palmatier).  Some of you who are on OWW's yahoo group might recognise it.  This info is very cool reading, and awesomely helpful!

"Somebody may have already posted these links, but just in case . . .

I asked a bunch of published writers if they'd be willing to post a synopsis that they wrote for a book that actually sold, and a bunch were willing. So I organized it into a Plot Synopsis Project. It was so successful that there was a second run a few months later which I called Plot Synopsis Project II. In addition, I ran a Query Project, where a bunch of writers posted what they did for queries. In all of these, you'll see that there isn't a set standard for what you do, and in some cases the writer wrote about the fact that they didn't even use a synopsis or query to get sold. So it gives you some perspective and hopefully helps you either write them, or at least keep you from freaking out about them too much. We wrote them as blog entires on our blogs, or pages on websites, so I'll link you to my parts of the project and you can follow the links from there to the other authors' sites. Some of the pages may have been removed, and some of the links may not be current, but hopefully you'll find enough still active to help you out. Here are the links. I hope you find them helpful:

As TJ McIntyre ([livejournal.com profile] southernweirdo ) posted:

"Several of us have been a part of Imaginary Word for a while now. This is a small, growing community of poets working and growing together. If you are interested in signing up and joining us, here is the link:  http://specpoet.proboards.com/."

We crit, say how a poem works for us, have fun 'ku'ing poems that inspire us, discuss trends, and just hang.  We even have our own little posting place, and our sales board, for bragging rights amongst ourselves.  So, oh poetic souls, come by, join up, post!  It's a cool little hangout!

Since my first published story was written to SF art, I've have a soft spot for a yumy SF/F painting.  Here, thanks to Jim Van Pelt, is a link to the ultimate SF/F art site:

You Are a Lynx
You are a quiet observer of the world around you. Your wisdom comes from listening carefully.
You've always been extra sensitive and aware. And it's made it difficult for you to fit in.

You see past people's outward personas. You are able to penetrate a stranger's soul.
What you've learned about people is both beautiful and ugly. And you keep these secrets to yourself.

Here is an interesting news clip, ganked from a Yahoo news post further ganked from an US News article:

"3. Bodice Rippers

Harlequin, the world's biggest publisher of series romance, saw North American sales rise $3 million in 2008's fourth quarter from a year earlier. Other escapist literature also has done well: Although most book sales were flat or down in February 2009 from the year before, a spokesperson for the Borders book chain says that science fiction and fantasy were up—as were humor titles"

Bolding mine.

..."Touching Peace" is accepted for Hadley Rille Books' upcoming anthology, "Global Warming Aftermaths"!

Cool, huh? This was the one story I really sweat over while writing.  I think I posted a few worries about it, earlier here in LJ.

It's getting close to that time when I contact Mr. Gunn about his Spring session of the online workshop.  Here is the link to those reserved for it -

http://will-couvillier.livejournal.com/35040.html

We now appear to have our confirmed group, and a list of interested people looking to attend a fall session.  If anyone is interested in this workshop and would like to be on the fall waiting list, please post!  Lots can change over a year, and with Prof Gunn considering 6-8 as the capacity for these you can easily find a spot.  Also, if enough are interested, there might be a spring list...

And, as a reminder of what is included in the workshop, here is the link to my post with the syllabus:

http://will-couvillier.livejournal.com/35079.html

Thanks!

EDIT: May as well keep the list here, as well.

On February 7, 2009 I participated in a rather interesting event.

The curious amongst you may ask, what event? My answer would be: Douglas County Library's  "An Afternoon with Local Authors" event, in Minden, Nevada. It is a gathering of local authors, and this meeting included seven participants, each representing different areas of writing. Everyone here knows what I write - so, also included was a mystery novelist, a young (15! You go, girl!) poet, a local historian, a political satirist, a poet/self help, and an author with a pamphlet regarding assisting with Alzheimer patients. Over all, the variation in subjects made the event quite interesting

And no, I DIDN'T HAVE TO READ! Whoot!

Here I am, set up, proudly displaying three of the HRB volumes my stories are in:

My table was fairly slow - being the only short story SF writer, I didn't get too many stops. Mostly the mystery novelist, Todd Borg, got the traffic. His Tahoe-based mystery series, now up to 6 books, has a good local following. So, I, and I have to say most, of the others had moderate flow to our tables. I did sell two volumes, one each of Desolate Places and Ruins Extraterrestrial.

It was fun, and rather interesting to mill with the other writers at the event. Dunno if it is a regular thing, but I'd go again.

My clean-up and revise-to-crit-suggestions for this story is done.  Now to subbing it - first market to get it will be WotF

EDIT:  Also, after reflecting on this tale, I realize that it is a true Hard SF.  The story would not be this story without the technology I built into it.  It was interesting to realize this, and to see how it fit the genre descriptions out there.

For those on the list that I have not added an "email" to, please email me at wcouvillier@gmail.com .  This also includes "interested", because although there will be a max of 8, a spot might become available by start time.  Anything can happen to change plans or take up a person's time.

Please post if you are still interested.  He feels that the best group size is 6-8.  The August session began with this number, and 3 participants completed it.  This seems to be the usual ratio.

You know, I don't think I'd care to have a third eye.  All this would do is provide more targets for pigeon poop, and increase the pain if I happen to catch pink-eye from my dog farting on my pillow.

Just sayin'.
